About the Course
Imagine navigating the world with only one hand. This is the reality for at least 6,000 people per year due to land mines, and increases to a larger number if we include accidents and civil unrest. This is your opportunity to make an enormous difference to someone's life. This activity has teams of 3-4 build a prosthetic hand that will be distributed, free of charge, to amputees living in developing countries.
Amputations occur through accidents at home or in the workplace, through civil unrest and war, and through munitions left over from previous wars. In 2021, the 25th year since the Landmine Ban, at least 5,600 people were killed or maimed by landmines. Civilians make up the primary victims of landmines and, of those, over 50% of them are children. In 2001, it was estimated there were over 300,000 landmine amputees, with the majority of them unable to afford a basic prosthesis that cost upwards of $3,000.
eams of 3-5 get all the parts they need and full instructions on how to build a working prosthetic hand. Once the hand is built and tested by the team, they write a personal note and decorate the bag in which the hand will be delivered to the recipient. This connection to the recipient, shows the commitment the team has to making a positive impact on a person's life.
TeamLab will collect the completed hands and return them to our partner for distribution to recipients in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Central America and South America.
This activity is fully facilitated with an introduction and motivating stories, all supplies and equipment to build the hands, delivery of the hands to us, quality checking, and delivery of the hands to the recipient. Once completed, this activity builds a true sense of accomplishment.
Note: this activity requires fine motor skills.
