About the Activity
LEGO® Play
Using the Power of Play to engage teams
LEGO® brings a tactile element to team building, enhancing individual and team creative thinking. Your team will be given a question or statement based on a theme and be challenged to build a 3-dimensional model using LEGO® bricks in response to the question or statement.
The questions or statements will be co-designed with you, to ensure the session meets the outcomes you are seeking.
The LEGO® Play ‘hands-on/minds-on’ approach has team members use 3-D models and metaphors to explain their ideas, insights, feelings, thoughts or opinions to the posed question/statement. This technique taps into deeper thinking and enhances open communication as the discussion is based on the model built and what it represents. Reducing the challenge of articulating complex ideas in words.
The bricks are the tool to enhance problem solving, communication, innovation, and team connections. The most important part of a LEGO® Play session is the questions posed, and we will work closely with you to design a session that meets the outcomes you are seeking. This can vary from giving the team an opportunity to have fun and connect, through to identifying team goals or purpose, solving problems, or strategies for the future.
TeamLINQ are certified LEGO® Serious Play facilitators.
Outcomes
Communication: individuals will share the meaning of their model creating deeper communication.
Problem-solving: models and metaphors are used to identify, solve or highlight a solution.
Teamwork: teams work together to combine individual ideas into a combined model.
Reflection: each model represents an individual thought, idea or feeling.
Boost engagement: experience the benefits of play in articulating abstract ideas and complex concepts.
Innovation: play and working with your hands boosts creativity and innovative ideas.

How does the activity run?
Introduction and Welcome
The host will introduce this interactive activity with a welcome and a short ‘pop quiz’ to reveal the activity of the day.
Warm Up
Each person will be introduced to the LEGO bricks and the idea of ‘thinking with your hands’. They will then be tasked with their first warm-up 3-D build.
Individual Models
In small groups, each person will build a range of 3-D models in response to questions or statements posed by the host. These will be determined in conjunction with the organiser of the event to ensure your outcomes are met.
Group Models
The activity includes a number of models built collaboratively by each small team. They combine the insights of everyone on the team. And finally, the activity will conclude with 1 or more models built with all participants contributing to the final model.
Wrap Up and Take Aways
The host will wrap up the session with a discussion and debrief on the activity and key learnings. The team are encouraged to identify insights to be actioned or implemented after the activity concludes.
Why does this approach work?
Firstly, hands-on building stimulates creative thinking and problem solving. Our hands are one of two parts of our body that stimulate largest portion of the brain dedicated to processing motor and/or sensory functions. When we start to build with our hands, the brain has been shown to light up and become alert.
Secondly, stories and metaphors are used to articulate the meaning behind the 3-D models. We all bring our own understanding and experiences, and the use of metaphors and stories help to explain what many of us cannot do as easily when relying on verbal explanations. As fast as a speeding race car gives more explanation that ‘very fast’, you can visualise a speeding race car – probably a red one racing around a track.
Thirdly, many of us associate using LEGO bricks with our childhood, a time when we used play to experiment, explore new things, and take risks. Using the idea of play, we reconnect with our childhood when we played without judgement.
