About the Course
This two-hour activity, has teams of 3-4 make a significant difference in the lives of a family living in a refugee camp in Uganda. Each team will build and test a real water filtration system that will be donated free of charge to a family living in water poverty. For each system you build, a second one will be donated doubling your impact.
Unsafe water is the biggest killer of children under 5 years old, with an unimaginable number of 5,000 dying per day. Over 1 billion people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water, and 50% of hospital beds are taken up by those suffering from water-borne diseases.
Once built and donated, you can track your water filtration system and see who receives it. The delivery partner provides training to each family on how to use their new system and how to fix the most common problems that may occur.
This activity includes an introduction to the problem we are addressing, all instructions and supplies for the build your water filtration system. The activity builds empathy with the recipients and empowers the team to make a contribution to families living differently to us.

How does the activity run?
Introduction and Team Warm-Up
The event will begin with your host welcoming you to the event. They will provide an overview of the activity and go over the how the activity will run.
Water Works Opening
Water Works commences with an informative presentation on the prevalence and impact of living with poor water quality. We share the difference your donation can make in the lives of another person, and explain the ‘double your impact’ concept in which a Household Water Filtration Kit is donated for each Emergency Kit.
Emergency Water Filtration Kit Build
Each team will be provided with a sealed box containing a disassembled emergency water filtration kit, instructions and the tools required to build the kit. This Emergency Kit will be used at times of crisis in communities around the world. This activity tests each team’s communication, teamwork, ability to follow instructions and highlights the strengths everyone brings to a group activity.
Wrap Up
Once the Kits are built, each team will write a message and design a plaque that will be affixed to the Household Water Filtration Kit that is donated on their behalf. The session wraps up with a presentation introducing how they can see who has received their Household Kit using the 3Billion Stories website (www.3billionstories.com) several recipients and a debrief on the activity by the host. The event wraps up with a team photo and congratulations to everyone.
