About the Activity
The LEGO Festive Challenge goes old school, no instructions with this one: just a pile of LEGO bricks, challenges and a team.
Small teams work to build a 3-D model based on a creative brief determined by the group with some exciting twists and detours thrown in. Just when you think you have it mastered, a twist pops up.
Once each team has created their masterpiece, they will face a new challenge; to merge with another team or two.
This LEGO challenge taps into each person’s creative mind – whether their creativity is obvious or hidden or dormant. Through planning and storytelling, they will work together to bring it all to life.
Outcomes
Communication: individuals will share the meaning of their model creating deeper communication.
Problem-solving: models and metaphors are used to identify, solve or highlight the challenge.
Teamwork: teams work together to combine individual ideas into a combined model.
Reflection: each model represents an individual thought, idea or feeling.
Boost engagement: experience the benefits of play in articulating abstract ideas and concepts.
Innovation: play and working with your hands boosts creativity and innovative ideas.

How does the activity run?
Introduction and Welcome
The host will introduce this interactive activity with a welcome and a short ‘pop quiz’ to reveal the activity of the day.
Warm Up
Each person will be introduced to the LEGO bricks and the idea of ‘thinking with your hands’. They will then be tasked with their first warm-up 3-D build.
Individual Models
In small groups, each person will build a range of 3-D models in response to questions or statements posed by the host. These will be determined in conjunction with the organiser of the event to ensure your outcomes are met.
Group Models
The activity includes a number of models built collaboratively by each small team. They combine the insights of everyone on the team. And finally, the activity will conclude with 1 or more models built with all participants contributing to the final model.
Wrap Up and Take Aways
The host will wrap up the session with a discussion and debrief on the activity and key learnings. The team are encouraged to identify insights to be actioned or implemented after the activity concludes.
Why does this approach work?
Hands-on building stimulates creative thinking and problem solving. Our hands are one of two parts of our body that stimulate largest portion of the brain dedicated to processing motor and/or sensory functions. When we start to build with our hands, the brain has been shown to light up and become alert.
Many of us associate using LEGO bricks with our childhood, a time when we used play to experiment, explore new things, and take risks. Using the idea of play, we reconnect with our childhood when we played without judgement.
