5 reasons why team building should be a priority

Team building activities often get a mixed reaction in the workplace. However, when done right, it plays a crucial role in enhancing workplace connection and culture.
There are many variations of team building from social lunches, after work drinks, out-of-the-office games such as ten pin bowling, and formal team building designed by specialist team building companies.
Specialist team building companies design experiences to improve workplace relationships, communication, collaboration, teamwork, problem solving and strategic thinking. All of which contribute to a more cohesive team and more positive working environment.
Team building should not be a one-and-done activity, but rather consistent opportunities for the team to connect beyond the day-to-day tasks. At TeamLINQ, we use team develoment and adult learning theories to build activities that are fun and engaging, inclusive of everyone, and have a purpose.
An investment in effective team building can improve the work environment by:
1. Improving communication. Good communication is vital in any relationship even working relationships. A team building activity outside of the office provides an opportunity for building communication. It provides a more relaxed and informal environment, with an activity to do, so small talk is limited (for those who do not enjoy small talk).
There should be a reflection a few days later to build on the experience, share insights and stimulate memories leading to impromptu conversations.
2. Building trust and enhancing collaboration. Team building activities are designed for individuals to work together towards a common goal. Team members to contribute to building a sense of trust, sharing of skills, and working collaboratively. A strong and productive team at work is one that trusts each other, communicates well and works together effectively.
3. Identifying strengths and problem solving. It may not be about solving the problem but about knowing who can help solve the problem. In many of our activities, teams are tasked with identifying solutions to a puzzle, to earning the most points, or to planning an approach. Knowing who on your team is good with logistics and planning, analysing information, generating ideas, ensuring everyone contributes, or there is fun and laughter, is really important. What you learn about yourself and others in the team building activity can be replicated back in the office.
4. Boost motivation and morale. The greatest asset of your company is your staff. A team building activity can show your employees that time away from their tasks and getting to know each other is important, and that you value them. At a recent team building event for 200 employees, we had several people tell us they had not done any fun activities for 5 years. They went away from the morning feeling upbeat, motivated and valued. Imagine if it happened regularly, and how employee morale and retention would be improved.
5. Increase retention and productivity. An engaged workplace with strong connections works more effectively, efficiently and are happier at work. Over the years, Gallup (www.gallup.com) has found that engaged employees lead to higher productivity, profitability, lower absenteeism and turnover, and stronger customer loyalty. At TeamLINQ, we see this with the companies we work with. Those who build regular team building into their business have employees that are highly engaged, love their company (and say so) and bring a strong positive energy.
